Latin Name: Althaea officinalis
A classic medicinal perennial with soft, velvety leaves and pale pink flowers. Marshmallow root and leaf are rich in soothing mucilage and have been used for centuries in traditional Western herbalism to calm and protect irritated tissues. Common traditional uses include support for the throat and lungs (dry coughs, hoarseness), digestive lining irritation, urinary tract discomfort, and topical soothing for inflamed or sensitive skin. Especially valued as a gentle, cooling herb.
Roots are typically harvested in fall of the plant’s second or third year however all parts of this plant are considered medicinal.
