Latin Name: Glycyrrhiza glabra
Licorice root has been used for centuries in traditional medicine, especially to soothe sore throats, calm coughs, aid digestion, and reduce inflammation. In herbal traditions from China to ancient Greece, it was also brewed into teas for stomach ulcers and respiratory troubles. Licorice was believed to bring harmony and also to “sweeten the spirit” which can be attributed to the natural compound, glycyrrhizin, which gives the roots its strong sweet taste.

Medicinal Actions: anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antiviral, and antioxidant properties
Planting: planted in greenhouse/indoors 4–6 weeks before the last spring frost or directly outdoors after all frost danger has passed. They require warm soil for germination.
